10 Signs You Need Immediate Local Garage Door Repair

Your garage door works hard. Most homes open and close it 3 to 5 times a day. That adds up to over 1,500 times a year. With all that use, parts wear out.

Some problems are small. Others are not safe to ignore. Knowing the warning signs can save you money and keep your family safe. Here are 10 signs you need to call a local garage door repair company right away.

1. The Door Will Not Open or Close

This is the most clear sign. If your door will not move at all, something major is wrong. It could be a broken spring & a dead opener. It could be a snapped cable.

Do not try to force the door up by hand. If a spring is broken, the door is much heavier than normal. You could hurt your back or drop the door on yourself. Call a pro.

2. You Hear a Loud Bang from the Garage

A loud bang, like a gunshot, almost always means one thing. A torsion spring just snapped. Springs are under huge tension. When they break, they let go fast and loud.

After this happens, the door may still close. But it will not open again. The spring does all the heavy lifting. Without it, the door is too heavy to move.

3. The Door Is Crooked or Hangs to One Side

A door that hangs crooked is in danger of falling off the track. This usually means a cable has snapped on one side. Or one of the springs is weaker than the other.

Stop using the door right away. A crooked door can fall and crush your car. It can also pinch fingers. This is one of the most urgent calls we get.

4. The Door Reverses Before It Closes

Your door goes down halfway, then jumps back up. This is a safety feature. Most doors have small eyes near the floor called photo-eye sensors. They watch for things in the way.

Sometimes the eyes are just dirty or knocked out of line. A quick fix. But if the sensors are fine, the problem could be the limit switch or the opener itself. A tech can check in minutes.

5. The Door Is Way Too Loud

All garage doors make some noise. But if yours has started to grind, squeak loud, or shake the whole house, something is wrong. The most common reasons are:

  • Worn-out rollers
  • Loose nuts and bolts
  • Dry hinges that need grease
  • A failing opener

A noisy door can often be fixed for under $150. If you wait, the loose parts can damage other parts. That small fix can turn into a big bill.

6. The Door Moves Slow or Jerks

A healthy door moves smooth. If yours starts and stops, or moves much slower than before, the motor is working too hard. This is a sign the springs are weak, the tracks are bent, or the rollers are stuck. Keep using a door like this and you will burn out the opener motor — a much bigger repair.

7. You See Frayed or Loose Cables

Take a look at the cables on each side of the door. They should be tight and clean. If you see fraying, rust, or strands sticking out, the cable is about to snap.

A snapped cable can hurt people. It can also pull the whole door off track. Do not wait for it to break. Get it fixed now.

8. The Remote or Keypad Will Not Work

Sometimes this is just a dead battery. Try that first. But if new batteries do not help, the issue could be:

  • A bad remote
  • A blocked or broken antenna on the opener
  • A logic board that has failed
  • A keypad that lost its code after a power surge

A local tech can fix or reprogram most remotes on the spot. We do this often after Georgia storms knock out power.

9. The Door Has A Dented or Damaged Section

A car bump, a basketball, or a big tree branch can dent a door section. A small dent may seem like just a looks issue. But it can throw off the balance. It can also weaken the panel and make it bend more over time.

Good news: you usually do not need a whole new door. Most doors can have just the bad section swapped out. This saves a lot of money.

10. Your Door Is Over 15 Years Old and Acting Up

Garage doors last a long time, but not forever. Most openers run for 10 to 15 years. Springs last about 7 to 10 years for a busy home. If your system is old and you are seeing more than one of these signs, it is time to call. A tune-up may keep it going, or a full replacement may save you money over many small repairs. A good local company will tell you the truth either way.

Why You Should Not Wait

Many people put off garage door repairs. But a broken door is more than a hassle. It can trap your car inside, leave your home open to thieves, cause injury, damage your car, and drive up your power bill. The cost to fix a small issue early is almost always less than the cost to fix it after it breaks all the way.
